What is Threadless Jewellery and How Does It Work?

Threadless jewellery has become increasingly popular in professional piercing studios over the last decade, and for good reason. Here's a plain English explanation of how it works and why it might be the right choice for your piercing.

How does threadless jewellery work?

A threadless piece has two components: the post and the end. The end has a small pin that you bend very slightly before inserting into the hollow post. That slight bend creates tension inside the post, which holds everything securely in place during normal wear.

To remove it you simply hold the post steady and push the end in while pulling it out with a slight twist. It takes about two seconds once you get the hang of it.

Is it secure?

Yes, when fitted correctly. The tension created by the bent pin is strong enough to stay put during everyday activity. It won't fall out on its own. If you find it comes loose easily, the pin needs a slightly more pronounced bend.

Why do piercers like it?

A few reasons. The insertion is smooth because there's no threading passing through the piercing. The ends are interchangeable, so if you want to swap a plain disc for something slightly different you just need a new end, not a whole new piece. And they're generally easier to handle for piercers working in tight spots like the nostril or tragus.

Is it right for my piercing?

Threadless jewellery works well for most piercings including nostril, helix, tragus, conch, flat, lip, labret, and lobes. For piercings with more movement or pressure, like some genital piercings or tongue piercings, internally threaded may be more appropriate.
